The American Dream Destroyed In the book by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the Great Gatsby, there is a central theme that the American inhalation has been abrogateed by physicalism. This is illustrated through the themes of fabrication of oneself, attitudes toward women, and the suppress of the American dream.
